What Makes A Severe Duty Motor?

“Severe duty” is an unofficial class of motor, one which lies in between a typical Totally Enclosed Fan Cooled (TEFC) motor and top-line IEEE 841-class motors.  Severe duty motors are called for primarily in two situations.  First, if the motor will be undergoing above-average strain, such as being called upon to redline frequently.  Secondly, if the motor will be operating in an environment full of particles -including outdoor conditions – which could potentially compromise traditional TEFC motors.

Severe duty motors are largely similar to TEFC models but are enhanced for greater durability.  They typically use heavier and stronger materials such as cast iron for parts that would be made of aluminum, or steel, in common motors.  They also feature significantly reinforced seals and intakes, reducing the number of particles that make their way into the engine.

Severe Duty Motors Deliver Worthwhile ROI

If you are in a situation where above-average toughness is called for, a severe duty motor can easily pay for itself.  They are typically only slightly more than a standard TEFC, while delivering significantly enhanced durability.  In most cases, the extra cost of the severe duty motor will be less than the cost of tearing down a piece of equipment for repairs.

In other words, if a severe duty motor prevents even a single breakdown, it has already paid for itself.
