Why Use the BAKC Shield Plate Adapter – Load Reactor Product

The BAKC Shield Plate Adapter – Load Reactor product is used when the shielded VFD cable between a VFD and its motor is required to be cut and re-terminated. A typical use for this product is in the electrical panel enclosure where load reactors on the VFD are required while maximizing the shield surface area continuity. It enhances plant safety, reduces downtime, and simplifies shielded cable terminations shortening startup time.

Left Side View WiredA VFD naturally produces common mode current, which must return from the motor to the sourcing VFD to cancel out. Placing a load reactor between the VFD and motor disrupts the direct path for this common mode current return. The return path must have direct surface area to travel and be isolated from any equipment on the plant’s electrical ground grid. Failure to do so will cause parasitic common mode high frequency “peak” currents to destroy sensitive equipment tied to your plant ground.

Having this common mode current on your protective earth ground grid is also a safety concern as the current can be high along with the voltage difference between your VFD and motor frame. Properly installed and 360 degrees terminated VFD shielded cable uses the shield’s surface area to allow the common mode current to return and isolate from sensitive areas easily. High-frequency common mode current will always find “surface area” to travel. The Shield Plate Adapter Load Reactor version is designed to allow high surface area termination cable clamping with low impedance surface area to allow the common mode current to return to the VFD as if the cable were not disrupted. Without the Shield Plate Adapter, making intermediate terminations with high inductive reactance wired pigtails, or removing the cable shield, will allow common mode current to find the paths of least impedance like your building steel which is your ground grid.
