Why Use the BAKC Cable Shield Head Adapter Product?
The BAKC Cable Shield Head Adapter is a product used when the shielded VFD cable between a VFD and its motor is required to be cut and re-terminated. You use BAKC Cable Shield Head Adapter in output disconnect panels, electrical panel enclosures with VFDs using separate mount load reactors, or terminal block terminations post the VFD. It enhances plant safety and reduces downtime.
A VFD naturally produces common mode current, which must return from the motor to the sourcing VFD to cancel out. An output disconnect becomes a problem for this return as this path must have direct surface area to travel and be isolated from any equipment on the plant’s electrical ground grid. Failure to do so will cause parasitic common mode high frequency “peak” currents to destroy sensitive equipment tied to your plant ground.
Having this common mode current on your protective earth ground grid is also a safety concern as the current can be high along with the voltage difference between your VFD and motor frame. Properly installed and 360 degrees terminated VFD shielded cable uses the shield’s surface area to allow the common mode current to return and isolate from sensitive areas easily. Since high-frequency common mode current always finds “surface area” to travel, we use the Shield Head Adapter to allow proper 360-degree termination with low impedance surface area. Hence, the common mode current returns to the VFD as if there was no cable disruption. Without the Shield Head Adapter, making intermediate terminations with high inductive reactance wired pigtails, or removing the cable shield, will allow common mode current to find the paths of least impedance like your building steel which is your ground grid.
